Designing the tallest stone-clad structure in the world required more than architectural ambition — it needed a materials system capable of extreme precision and performance.
Rising 412.5 metres above Kuwait City, the Al Hamra Tower is not only the tallest building in the country but also the tallest direct-adhered stone façade in the world. At its core is a complete façade tile installation system from LATICRETE.
The project’s key challenge was the structural integrity of its spiral cantilevered concrete shear walls, which could not support the weight of traditional, mechanically fixed stone panels. The solution: replace heavy stone panels with a direct-adhered limestone tile system — including a mesh-mounted, trencadis-style finish on upper levels — to replicate the desired aesthetic at a fraction of the load.
Extensive analysis using Abaqus FEA commercial simulation software allowed the architects and engineers to model thermal expansion, shrinkage, and high wind conditions unique to Kuwait. The testing confirmed the LATICRETE system could meet the project’s exacting performance criteria for bond strength, flexibility, and heat resistance.
The specification ultimately called for LATICRETE 254 Platinum, an adhesive mortar renowned for its exceptional shear bond strength and balanced shear modulus. Combined with LATICRETE’s dense, durable grout and full-system components, the result was a permanent, high-strength façade capable of withstanding extreme temperatures, seismic movement, and wind load.
